Causes of Mental Illness - Look Real Close Here!

Although the exact cause of most mental illnesses is not known, it is becoming clear through research that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological and environmental factors.

What Biological Factors Are Involved in Mental Illness?
Some mental illnesses have been linked to an abnormal balance of special chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters help nerve cells in the brain communicate with each other. If these chemicals are out of balance or are not working properly, messages may not make it through the brain correctly, leading to symptoms of mental illness. In addition, defects in or injury to certain areas of the brain have also been linked to some mental conditions.

Other biological factors that may be involved in the development of mental illness include:

• Genetics (heredity): Many mental illnesses run in families, suggesting that people who have a family member with a mental illness are more susceptible (have a greater likelihood of being affected) to developing a mental illness. Susceptibility is passed on in families through genes. Experts believe many mental illnesses are linked to abnormalities in many genes — not just one. That is why a person inherits a susceptibility to a mental illness and doesn’t necessarily develop the illness. Mental illness itself occurs from the interaction of multiple genes and other factors –such as stress, abuse or a traumatic event — which can influence, or trigger, an illness in a person who has an inherited susceptibility to it.

• Infections: Certain infections have been linked to brain damage and the development of mental illness or the worsening of its symptoms. For example, a condition known as pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorder (PANDA) associated with the Streptococcus bacteria has been linked to the development of obsessive-compulsive disorder and other mental illnesses in children.

• Brain defects or injury: Defects in or injury to certain areas of the brain have also been linked to some mental illnesses
.
• Prenatal damage: Some evidence suggests that a disruption of early fetal brain development or trauma that occurs at the time of birth — for example, loss of oxygen to the brain — may be a factor in the development of certain conditions, such as autism.

• Other factors: Poor nutrition and exposure to toxins, such as lead, may play a role in the development of mental illnesses.

What Psychological Factors Contribute to Mental Illness?

Psychological factors that may contribute to mental illness include:
• Severe psychological trauma suffered as a child, such as emotional, physical or sexual abuse

• An important early loss, such as the loss of a parent
• Neglect

• Poor ability to relate to others

What Environmental Factors Contribute to Mental Illness?
Certain stressors can trigger an illness in a person who is susceptible to mental illness. These stressors include:

• Death or divorce

• A dysfunctional family life

• Living in poverty

• Feelings of inadequacy, low self-esteem, anxiety, anger or loneliness

• Changing jobs or schools

• Social or cultural expectations (For example, a society that associates beauty with thinness can be a factor in the development of eating disorders.)

• Substance abuse by the person or the person’s parents

What is Attention Deficit Disorder?

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Some children have more trouble paying attention in class and completing academic assignments than others. It is estimated that from 3 to 10 percent of the population has a condition known as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This disorder is said to be found present more often in boys than girls (3:1).

Not every student having trouble completing assignments or who is squirmy and disruptive to the class has Attention Deficit Disorder. This is particularly true in the lower grades where many of the students have not reached a level of maturity sufficient to meet the demands of the classroom. Some studies have found that a first grade teacher may rate as many as 50% of the boys in the class as having Attention Deficit Disorder using common clinical questionnaires. Thus, educators may mislabel behavior as being abnormal when it actually may be within the low end of normal development.

Actually, normal attention span seems to develop in three stages. First, the child’s attention is said to be overly exclusive. This is a term used by psychologists to describe attention that is focused on a single object for a long period of time while tuning out all other stimuli. An example of this would be a baby who focuses totally on a button or a pin on the clothing of the person holding him. A child whose attention becomes stuck at this stage of development might be diagnosed as having autism.

Second, a child’s attention develops to where it is overly inclusive. This refers to a very wide span of attention that is constantly and rapidly changing from one object to another such as a toddler who is running from one toy to the next never able to stay with any one toy for any period of time. A child who is stuck at the second stage of attention span development might be diagnosed as having attention deficit disorder.

Third, the child develops selective attention where he is able to shift focus at will from being inclusive to being very exclusive. This is a mature pattern of attention and concentration that is required to be successful in a classroom learning environment.

There are a variety of causes for poor attention, concentration and impulse control. A partial list would include the following:

Immaturity and slow psychological development

Learning disabilities such as dyslexia

Anxiety

Depression

Low thyroid

Low motivation

Lack of sufficient sleep

Poor nutrition

Boredom due to lack of challenge

If your child has had the symptoms of poor attention, concentration and/or poor impulse control for some time, you should have your child examined by his physician. In addition to a physical exam and appropriate lab tests, the physician may have the parents and teachers complete questionnaires about the child’s behavior. He may also refer you to a school psychologist or a mental health professional for further assessment. Depending on the outcome of the entire evaluation, one or several specific medical, educational or psychological recommendations may be given.

Causes of Attention Deficit Disorder

The symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are caused by a neurological dysfunction within the brain. Several studies using PET scans have confirmed that there is a definite difference in brain functioning between a group of individuals diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder and those without it. The underlying physiological mechanism which causes Attention Deficit Disorder is still not thoroughly understood and remains under scientific study. I

t is presumed that brain chemistry is out of balance and that specific chemicals called neurotransmitters may be lacking in individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder. In two research studies, when the Attention Deficit Disorder subjects were given their medication and rescanned, their brain activity appeared to be much more like that of the normal group. Another interesting finding of these studies is that the areas of the brain in the Attention Deficit Disorder group where brain activity was lower than in the normal group are known to be associated with such functions as attention and concentration as well as planning and organization.

These are the very functions that are impaired in persons with Attention Deficit Disorder. PET scans are considered to be very invasive because they involve the injection of radioactive material into the individual and therefore are not appropriate for diagnostic purposes. To date only two studies of Attention Deficit Disorder using PET scans have been conducted.

Attention Deficit Disorder may be either inherited or acquired. Recent research in genetics has definitely shown that Attention Deficit Disorder runs in families. The specific chromosomes that are involved have not been fully identified though more clues are being discovered as research progresses. Like many other disorders, a child may have the symptoms while his parents may not. Usually there are aunts, uncles, grandparents or cousins with the disorder.

Attention Deficit Disorder may be acquired through various conditions that cause insult (damage) to the brain. During pregnancy and delivery these include the use of drugs during pregnancy, toxemia, infectious diseases, overexposure to radiation, prematurity, complicated delivery. After birth these include meningitis, encephalitis, seizures from fever, head injury and lead toxicity. Excessive use of sweets does not cause Attention Deficit Disorder though it may make the symptoms worse for some individuals who already have the condition

Since many children with Attention Deficit Disorder appear to “outgrow” the condition it can also be looked at as a developmental disorder. Some children seem to develop the ability to pay attention and concentrate later than others just as there is a wide range to timing for developing the ability to walk, talk or be potty trained. In the past, children with Attention Deficit Disorder and other learning disabilities were labeled as “underachievers” in their younger years and then reclassified as “late bloomers” when their development in this area finally caught up with their peers.

Today, many adults look back and realize they had a learning disability or Attention Deficit Disorder as a child which they may or may not have been able to overcome. Some people with Attention Deficit Disorder become very successful. However, others continue to have significant symptoms as adults. Some were not able to adapt or compensate on their own and did not receive any help from teachers, parents or professionals. These individuals often dropped out of school and may today be social drop outs of one kind or another. It is for this last reason that children who exhibit signs of Attention Deficit Disorder or learning disabilities should receive all the help necessary and available to spare them the frustration and anguish often associated with these conditions.

Nervous Breakdown? It Can Happen To You!

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Although it appears to be increasingly falling out of the common lexicon, the term “nervous breakdown” was once used to describe any number of mental health problems that appeared to strike suddenly. Unfortunately, the term is often used loosely or casually, and sometimes, as in films and TV, for comic effect. But is there really such as thing as a nervous breakdown? Well yes, and no.

Yes—a person can indeed ‘break down’ suddenly. The human body is a fragile mechanism that, when put under too much stress, will stop functioning normally.

A person exposed to long-term, unrelenting severe stress is particularly vulnerable to experiencing a ‘breakdown.’ How does a breakdown manifest itself? The primary characteristic of a breakdown usually involves some sudden disintegration of the self. This means that an individual who usually follows a set pattern of behaviors will suddenly break away from their routine. Imagine this scenario: a person wakes every morning, goes to work, seems to function normally, visits with friends as usual, and then returns home. Imagine this person suddenly waking one morning and unable to get up. They have lost their drive, their ability to function normally, to communicate with family or friends. Perhaps they are even incapable of dressing or eating. This person is experiencing a nervous breakdown.

What other types of symptoms might be described as those associated with having a nervous breakdown? Some individuals might experience the uncontrollable need to cry, loss of energy, withdrawal, confusion, despair, inability to think clearly, sleep disruption or insomnia, loss of pleasure in everyday activities, feelings of worthlessness and depression. These “down and out” feelings are characteristic of depressive disorders.

Some individuals have breakdowns that manifest symptoms of psychosis. Breakdowns involving psychosis may involve hearing voices, seeing visions, feelings of paranoia, feelings of being pursued, feeling sensations that are not really present, grandiose or delusional behavior, bizarre public behavior, feeling of jealousy, and feelings of violence.

Whatever the nature of the breakdown, all breakdowns have in common the inability to function as normal.

What is a nervous breakdown really? A person who experiences symptoms of a nervous breakdown is suffering from some sort of mental disorder. That is, despite what we used to think, a nervous breakdown in and of itself is not an illness or disease. They are merely symptomatic of a larger problem. In fact, no legitimate physician or mental health professional would ever diagnose someone as having a nervous breakdown.

The characteristics of a nervous breakdown can be symptomatic of a large variety of mental illnesses. The most common illness that resembles these characteristics is a Major Depressive episode. Other disorders that are related to what we think of as a nervous breakdown include panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma disorders, acute stress disorder, schizophrenia, psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, depression, and mood disorders. All of these mental disorders are characteristic of what many laypeople would characterize as a nervous breakdown.

Who is most likely to suffer from a nervous breakdown? Almost anyone who is subjected to undue stress is capable of experiencing a nervous breakdown. For instance, any person who has been subjected to extreme stress and trauma is vulnerable to experiencing a disorder that mimics the general perception of a nervous breakdown. For instance, a young person returning from battle may experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

A woman experiencing severe depression after the birth of her child may experience post-partum depression. How can a person suffering any of the characteristics of a nervous breakdown get help? Sometimes the hardest part of recovery is getting the person to visit a doctor. For some kinds of mental disorders, a nervous breakdown can be a blessing in disguise. An individual suffering from severe anxiety or depression may find her self speaking to a psychotherapist for the first time. A person who suffered alone for long time may suddenly find himself getting better with medical attention. In many fortunate cases, the person who experienced the nervous breakdown may emerge from therapy stronger and healthier than ever before. Treatments can include antidepressant and psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, and prescribed periods of rest.

Prevention of nervous breakdowns is an oft-ignored subject that researchers are beginning to study. The characterization of a nervous breakdown as something that happens very suddenly can be misleading. In many cases, symptoms of the coming breakdown are present, but either the individual or their family and friends ignore them. Individuals who sense themselves becoming increasingly stressed, depressed, angry, or violent are encouraged to seek help immediately.

Am I Going Mad or Just Mentally Ill?

Friday, October 26th, 2007

There is no known exact reason why some people develop mental illnesses while others don’t or how they come to be. There are so many symptoms that one could have that could be considered normal or a possible illness, it can be hard to tell. Trying to tell if you are just stressed out, having a bad day or month, have an underlying physical illness, or if you have a mental illness cannot be easy sometimes.

You must have many and multiple specific feeling and behaviors over a long period of time to be considered mentally ill. You must meet the criteria laid out by a psychiatrist. Some people who have all the symptoms come to find out they are only borderline in their illness and don’t need medication and major intervention. Most of these people can be treated with behavioral therapy and stress reduction. Some behaviors that can arise can signify whether or not you have a particular disorder or not. You will have to have a minimum number to be considered mentally ill. Some are:

• Extreme sadness that won’t go away, anger and/or irritability

• Eating changes such as eating more or less that usual

• Sleeping problems or changes

• Fatigue that is new

• Difficulty concentrating and making decisions

• Feeling guilty, worthless, or no good

• Physical ailments that don’t seem to have a physical cause

• Inability to find enjoyment

• Abusing drugs and/or alcohol

• Thinking about dying and hurting or killing yourself

• Feeling extremely happy and energetic for no reason

• Feeling extremely powerful, very confident, and like you can do anything

• Need less sleep than normal

• Too many projects on at one time

• Quick fuse, angry, and aggressive

• Racing thoughts that won’t go away

• Incessant talking

• Restless and jumpy

• Making rash and hasty decisions

• Trouble focusing and bouncing from topic to topic, or thought to thought

• Impulsive behavior like having unprotected sex, spending lots of money, and driving fast

• Thinking that people are out to get you

• Hallucinations, hearing and/or seeing things that is not there

More than five of the above may indicate a mental illness or borderline syndrome. If you or someone you know has a mental illness it does not mean you are nuts, crazy, a bad person or mad. It means that you have a sickness that needs to be treated like any other illness does. Never try to diagnose yourself, always see you doctor to make sure that there isn’t something else going on.

Only a trained professional can tell you if you have a mental illness. Seeing your doctor will let you know if this was just a fleeting moment or if there truly is an emotional and behavior issue and underlying mental illness. We all have things happen in our life that might cause a temporary over exaggerated surge of emotions such as the death of a loved one, getting a raise or new job, getting married or having a child. These things will not affect your activities of daily living by causing long term depression, sleep disturbances, or over excitability. If you ever are thinking about suicide or that you might hurt your self or others call your local emergency number or crisis hot line. Get to the hospital or doctors as soon as you can.

The best thing you can do if you suspect that you have a mental illness is to see your doctor immediately early diagnosis is the key.

You can talk to any health care professional they are trained to see the major warning signs of a metal illness and can help you get where you need to be and get the treatment that is best for you. Another warning sign is when friends and loved ones are telling you that you have changed or many of your normal behaviors have. It is always better to go to the doctor rather than have the symptoms worsen and possibly get out of control. He or she will do a thorough physical exam to make sure there is no physical illness such as a bacterial or viral infection or any other disease. You will also be asked to describe your life style habits and a series of other questions to help pinpoint what is going on.

Signs of a Mental Illness

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Mental illness is a growing and more recognizable problem in the United States and in the world. There are several different types of mental illness, all with several different types of attributes attached to them. By knowing the mental illness that you are dealing with and seeing what indicators are attached to them, you can become healthier and move away from the illness.

Mental illness is not anything that can be defined by itself, but rather, through a series of symptoms that are part of the illness. These different attributes will affect both internal and external environments in one’s life. By indicating the different signs in relation to the mental illness, it will become easier to get this diagnosed. From here, you can get treatment from a therapist or by medications. Before you get help, however, you must recognize the different signs that are part of it.

Mental illness is a condition that stops someone from being able to think normally or behave at a normal level. There are often times several symptoms that are linked to the mental illnesses. Most of these symptoms will last for a longer amount of time. Mental illness takes place through several different kinds of relations to the body. This includes a relation to the physical. It also includes thought behaviors as well as patterns that may take place in emotions.

One of the signs to look for with mental illness is withdrawal. You may find that you, or someone you know, are moving away from groups, family, friends or loved ones; it might be a sign of a type of mental illness. One of the things that you may find is that you do not want to participate in social activities like you usually do. When friends begin to disappear and when you find that you do not want to be around your family or those that are considered significant others, it may be a sign of a mental illness.

Changes in levels of concentration might also be a part of the mental illness. A lack of focus or the inability to hold other different levels of concentration might occur. This may affect your work area, school or conversations with those that you know. Several will find that concentration is lost in several different areas of life, making it difficult to function at a normal energy level.

Sleeping is one of the signs that are often related to mental illness. This can take shape in two forms. One of these may include you not being able to sleep. Hyperactivity and restlessness are often associated with this as well. At the other extreme, you may want to sleep consistently, and always have a tired feeling. Feeling like you don’t want to participate in regular activities, or don’t have the regular energy to participate in what you used to may be part of the mental illness.

Weight change is another physical sign that may be related to depression. Overeating is one of the signs in relation to this. One may also have a loss in appetite, causing them to loose weight at a rapid pace in an unhealthy manner. Weight loss or gain can take place in several different types of mental illness for several different types of reasons.

Mood swings and emotional changes are another part of mental illness. One may find that they become agitated or worried easily. There also may be several times that are filled with sadness and hopelessness. Mood swings can also move another way and cause anger to become more prominent without control.

Delusions, though not common in all types of mental illnesses, can often occur as well. Depending on the type of mental illness that is taking place, one may begin to hallucinate about certain things or become delusional about the people and places that are surrounding them.

Anything that is drastically changed in relation to practices, habits, thinking, emotions and moods may be part of a mental illness. While there are several unique and dominant factors in the different types of mental illnesses, they are all triggered by a sudden change in internal thinking. By understanding these different factors, it will become easier for you to help yourself or someone else in overcoming their illness.
