Tell Me It’s a Dream, You’re My Last Hope - The Entire 5 Chapter of Out of Darkness

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Besides medicine, I have even had shock treatments and that seemed to help for a while. I must tell you, though, the treatment you receive in the psychic wards is normally terrible

(to a degree).

They treat you as less than a person and more like a child. They show you no respect and so many of the nurses have lost their loving side and have forgotten why they got into the field in the first place! I can tell you from experience all you want is love and a way to see that THERE MIGHT BE HOPE for the future, in any way, shape, or form. They really dont understand what you are going through; they just go through the motions of what the manual says. Let me tell you one thing

THAT MANUAL DOES NOT KNOW SQUAT!

Now to come to one of the hospitals side, the last time I had to go in to get a medicine change, they were much better and my stay easy better that the last time, which was five years ago. I would to mention Bud a male nurse who was terrific and he would really take time out of his day to spend time with you and would many things that need to be done by all nurses, THANK YOU BUD!

What you as a patient are looking for is love! Its that simple. You can get a feeling if someone really cares or is just doing their job, and most of the nurses are just doing their job, this I can assure you! There were two nurses that I remember. Lets call one Alice and the other Sue. Alice was a real piece of work, always unpleasant and rude to everyone. Were talking downright nasty; Alice made the Wicked Witch of the West look friendly. Any chance Alice got to tear into someone she took it.

I remember there was one patient named Joe, and yes, he was a bit odd, and wasnt wearing any socks. Alice saw this and came unglued. She ran out yelling at him for not wearing any socks and telling him how we must follow the rules! I mean its one thing to let someone know they are wrong but to ball them out right there in front of everyone is humiliating, to say the least!

I lost all the respect I had for Alice at that point and would have loved to give her a piece of my mind! I really dont think that she even liked herself!

This type of behaviors is wrong, whether were talking about the mentally ill or anyone, for that matter! I mean how was this guy, or any of us, supposed to recover with a nurse like that around?

Then there was Sue. Like Alice she was never happy, always rude and unpleasant. I am sure you know what I am talking about, just plain mean and nasty. I remember her taking jabs at everyone, every chance she could get! She was no fun at all.

No one could stand Sue and Alice. I know it wasnt just me, as they were the center of our discussions at the smoke breakseveryone felt the same about them! I am not trying to put down all psychic ward nurses because I have come across some great ones.

Do you realize that one rotten nurse could effect up to twenty people a day for the negative and honestly we need to weed theses people out of the system, look for my Out of Darkness Mission Statement in Appendix B, you will learn very much what needs to take place in this country.

(BUT they are the exception RATHER THAN the norm)

and when you get that nice one, oh, the difference it makes to you. Please let me take the time right now to stop and thank the nurses who showed me love and compassion, as that was truly what I needed:

THANK YOU ALL!

One of the practices that really disturbs me is this; these hospitals only let you smoke one cigarette an hour. When you have biological unhappiness and you are bad enough to be put in the hospital, they take away one of the last remaining things that you have to keep your sanity! Their excuse is, Well, this is a nonsmoking hospital, you are lucky they let you smoke at all. Please try to understand when you have biological unhappiness the last thing you need taken away from you is smoking. It about kills you.

I have been in one hospital, a big one up in Cleveland, Ohio, that would not let you smoke at all. They give you the patch and Nicorette gum and say, good luck. You just tried to kill yourself and they take away your cigarettes, now do you think that is a fair practice?

(DONT YOU HAVE ENOUGH STACKED AGAINST YOU THAT YOU DONT NEED TO WORRY ABOUT QUITTING SMOKING TOO?)

On another tack, I have seen a doctor put an egg timer on his patients and when their fifteen minutes was up too bad, on to the next. To this day this makes me furious. Do you really think he only charged them for fifteen minutes? I mean he went through the trouble to get to the hospital, thats worth $500, isnt it? And they wonder why health care costs are rising in this country; these are just some of the things that needed to be pointed out.

Oh, that reminds me of another nurse, at a hospital up in Cleveland. I wont name the hospital for legal reasons. We will call this nurse Ken. They had just informed me I had BPD (borderline personality disorder) and I asked Ken what this was.

He said that since I was going home that day to look it up on the computer! Can you believe that? Look it up on the damn computer, how in the hell did he know that I even had one?

(I MEAN I HAD FOUR KIDS AND MADE ONLY $13,000 A YEAR.)

And this was after I screwed a two-inch wood lag screw through my hand!

(very painful.)

That hospital gave up on me in only one day; they let me go home after only twenty-four hours! Now where were the love and compassion there? I went to Ken because I was afraid and didnt know which way to turn and he left me in the lurch.

(HE WAS MY LAST HOPE; THATS THE WAY I FELT AT THE TIME!)

I think stuff like this is just plain awful and should never take place; I mean what do they pay these people for?

I recall one therapist. I was feeling suicidal and this guy acted like it was no big deal. He told me all the beds were taken and that it was real tough to get in at the present time. Give me a break, either you need to be in or you dont. Then it came out, and my wife was there to prove this. He told me I would have to put a gun to my head to get admitted!

I was outraged! I mean of all the things to say to someone with a mental illness, you have got to be kidding me. Let me put it this way, I was pissed off and I am sure he could tell. My wife was mad too and we stormed out soon after. How can a person who admits people to the hospital say to someone with a mental illness that the only way you can get in is to put a gun to your head? To this day I cannot understand that comment and never will.

These are definitely not the kind of things we need going on in any system! It is not my intention to single anyone out. Im just pointing out some of the areas that need improvement.

(and there are many.)

While the system is good for people who need it, it needs to be greatly improved, thats all. These places tend to overmedicate you and take your money and run up your bill. At least thats the way you feel after you recover, and I am sure there is plenty of it going on.

Now dont get me wrong, a few doctors besides Dr. Heller have had that hopeful, loving side. And by the way, Dr. Heller is not a psychiatrist; he practices as a family physician so your bills are greatly lowered.

(HE TRULY IS AN A AMAZING MAN!)

One thing I like about Dr. Heller is that he tells you what you have; for example, if you have ADHD he tells you so. This is totally different from all the psychiatrists; they would not tell you what your diagnosis was.

It may be that Dr. Heller tells you so you can educate yourself and have a better chance at recovery. I must say I have been on both sides and Dr. Hellers way works far better. You feel as though you have a chance to beat what you have, because you know what you are up against. Thats just one of the ways Dr. Hellers approach differs from the others and how I believe that it is better.

In all those years I never had one of my shrinks or doctors tell me that I would get well enough to stop taking medicine and have a complete recovery, not even the hope of it happening. What kind of hope is that, telling me that I will need them for the rest of my life!

Thats not the message people need to hear. Dr. Heller, on the other hand, paints a picture of Hope and Joy and how to love yourself again, and that even though you have biological unhappiness you can, with hard work and HOPE and the right medication, have your life back and make an impact on the world.

Thats the message we need to hear, dont you think?

What I would have loved to hear from those various doctors is that anything is possible and never give up and hope that tomorrow is going to be better! Yet it was the same thing over and over againtry this and try that, more pills here and more pills there. You start to think that the pills are your only hope but all they do is numb your relationship with your friends and family and your kids, creating a black hole with no possible way out.

The Entire 7 Chapter - Out of Darkness

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

I must at this point mention the treatment I received from the management of the place where I used to work! I had always done my best for this company, but they always were of the opinion that I somehow was faking my illness or that I didn’t want to work! This is just not true. I must admit that I see their point of view to an extent.

On the other hand I was treated unfairly and discriminated against. I feel that the public and people with biological unhappiness need to hear about this. This type of behavior needs to be stopped and in a hurry, as these people have enough stacked against them in the first place!

Let me point out some of the things that I feel were unjust and unfair in their practice. First, I was fired and lost my insurance a few months before Christmas when I still had a year to go on my sick leave.

(WONDERFUL THING TO DO!)

They said there was nothing else that I could do. Doesn’t that seem a little far-fetched coming from a multibillion-dollar corporation? Surely they didn’t look at all the possibilities. There should have been something that I could have done.

I must admit the treatment I received from the plant manager was terrible, to say the least. He always acted like he was doing me a favor and his attitude showed that he didn’t think I was really disabled, yet I had all the information, doctors’ notes and everything, that stated that I truly was disabled. I have had my foreman take bets on how long I would make it back to work; just to let you know he bet on two weeks!

Now does that sound like I got a fair chance to you? I was harassed by one of the quality control personnel and to prove this I had to have two special union meetings with my union reps present. This happened not once but twice with this person, and they later rewarded him for harassing me by making him a foreman!

(THAT’S THE KIND OF PEOPLE WE NEED IN CHARGE.)

I must admit this treatment made it nearly impossible to go to work anyway. You see, I was in a no-win situation and with all the trouble I had with them I honestly could not work without fear of the company picking on me. It was three years before they would let me go see my doctor without any points, and I had to get a lawyer for the reasonable accommodations. Now does that sound like they were working with me?

This type of behavior simply should not be tolerated. People with mental illness have enough to deal with to get better, let alone the added pressure of their employer hassling them. I can assure you that it makes you look bad to all your peers also, and this only adds to the trouble that you are already dealing with.

So if you know someone in this position, please be kind. They do want to work and are trying the best they can. Please give them the respect and honor they so greatly deserve. They are just like you and me with some crosses of their own to bear. If this helps just one person with their employer then I feel this section has more than served its purpose.

I must let you know as of this revision there is still much progress to be made in the work force for people that have mental disorders and yes they get shit on and no one seems to care. I mean we must help these people try to work in any way we can because if we can give them some self esteem, you would be surprised at just what they can do, so let’s stand up and be counted and put an end to this negative stigma and make ok to work with a mental health disorder.
